Gear review

This page gives a review of the used gear in the project.

The following has been used:

  • Heidenau K60 tyres: there was a possibility to get sponsering from continental and use TKC80 but it did not work out. In fact I am glad because for Central Asia there is not a better choice than the K60. Most roads are asphalt and gravel which are great for K60. They give double the life over the TKC80. After 6000km they still have good thread while at this point you can mostly trash the continentals.
  • 2 BMW rally 3 suits: the suits give good protection. the cordura layer is strong and the protections inside are very strong but flexible. in high temperatures they are still bearable because of all zippers which can be opened. in cold circumstances the windprotection layer is added which makes it warm enough for mountains until 0 degrees celcius.
  • Meindl walking boots: in fact I am glad I did not take my motocross boots. The reason is that we do not ride extreme offroad. The walking boots we took along give protection and allow us to walk comfortable in the mountains as well.
  • touratech 3l extra jerry can: this is an important part but there is a problem with the attachment to the case. When the jerrycan is fuel it is heavy, and under offroad conditions it always becomes loose so you have to extra secure it with ropes or something. bad points for touratech here.
  • sena smh5 bluetooth communication: this is a good system if you ride slow which means below 90kph. above and with volume set to max you simply have to shout and then again it is not very clear.
  • 2 arai cross helmets: offer good comfort also when going fast. has levers to allow more air flow for hotter conditions.
  • gpsmap 62st with touratech usb power cable: this cable is not ideally as the contact with the gps can become loose. I have solved this by putting some tape around the usb endpoint. bad points again for touratech here.
